Despite the intermittent but heavy rain, Hay Festival delivered another unforgettable experience. This time, my brood’s excitement centred around Tim Peake’s session, especially for my eldest child, who is passionate about all things space and planets. Tim is not only an ambassador for space exploration but also a down-to-earth, highly personable individual who left a lasting impression on us and the entire audience.

From the moment he stepped onto Hay’s Discovery stage, Tim captivated us with his stories of life aboard the International Space Station, sharing the wonders of gazing down upon our beautiful planet from above. His vivid accounts had everyone, including my three, hanging on to every word as he brought the experience of space travel to life. Yet what further impressed me was Tim’s ability to connect with the younger members of the audience. He patiently answered their questions, using analogies and examples that resonated with their curious minds. Listening to him interact with the young, inclusive of, and wider than the aspiring astronauts and scientists, was truly heart-warming.

After the session, we were privileged to meet Tim in person. My eldest, who had been bursting with questions but missed the chance to ask during the session, finally had the opportunity to ask Tim directly. Tim’s warm and engaging demeanour put my child at ease, and he answered the question with enthusiasm and clarity. To top it off, my son walked away with a personalised book, a cherished memento of this extraordinary encounter.

Beyond his accomplishments as an astronaut, Tim’s character shone through. He exuded humility, gratitude, and a genuine desire to inspire the next generation. His passion for exploration is infectious, leaving us all with a renewed sense of awe and wonderment towards the cosmos. So thank you, Hay Festival, and Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock who facilitated the session, but also thank you Tim, for being a fantastic ambassador for space exploration and for reinforcing the point that the universe is full of wonders waiting to be explored. Your book welcomes us now, in your absence. A welcome change from the anxiety-wielding messages our young are dealt with. Your impact on igniting imagination and aspirations is a gift we will treasure forever.
