Embracing Depth and Reflection in an Era of Accelerated Scholarship
I am very excited for the new year, as it brings fresh opportunities for research and publications. In 2024, my postdoctoral work will be centred around three of my essential themes: ethical entrepreneurship, educator education, and elevated cognition, taking opportunities where possible to undergird with existential reflections.
Central to my personal research goals is a phenomenological approach, which guides exploration of specific themes by delving into the lived experiences and thought processes that shape them. The challenges and opportunities presented in our increasingly digital world also inspire my upcoming initiatives, aiming to deepen my understanding of the intersection between technology and human cognition.
Entrepreneurship
In partnership with Professor David A. Kirby, I remain committed to fostering ethical entrepreneurship that prioritises people and the planet. Through ‘Harmonious Entrepreneurship,’ our collaborative efforts will continue to build upon our existing work, emphasising sustainable business practices and community-oriented strategies.
Phenomenological Inquiry
In 2024, I am highly motivated to progress projects that reflect my passion for phenomenological inquiry. A key area of focus will be supporting educators to reflect on and enhance the development of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in their students. This also includes understanding the implications of digital tools in education to inform learning environments where students can engage in deep, reflective, and curiosity-driven learning experiences. My upcoming co-edited book with my hanfod.NL team, Dr Mike Jonson (Cardiff University), Professor Catherine Adams (University of Alberta, Canada), and Professor Nina Bonderup Dohn (University of South Denmark), along with a newly commissioned monograph with Palgrave Macmillan that builds on my recent doctoral thesis, provides a comprehensive exploration of these themes. These publications seek to provide real-world guidance for educators facing the everyday challenges of teaching in a digital age. By blending insights from phenomenology with practical perspectives, they offer support to those navigating the complexities of modern educational environments.
Doctoral Mentorship & Educator Support
Alongside supporting the entrepreneurial mindset of educators from primary through university, I am particularly excited by my new role as a doctoral supervisor. I am energised by the opportunity to mentor emerging scholars who are delving into the intricate relationship between technology and various fields such as education, business, and the creative industries. I am humbled by this role, which provides a unique platform to influence and support the next generation of educators and researchers.
In this ever-changing landscape, where societal shifts are a riddle in real time, I eagerly embrace philosophical and phenomenological research. Following a 2023 filled with the pressures of fine-tuning my thesis and preparing for my doctorate, amidst numerous systemic battles, I find solace in this approach. It offers a valuable lens for examining societal impacts on human experience, cognition, and education. Preparing for the phenomenological attitude involves a deep introspective shift, cultivating openness, and suspending judgments, a contrast to the frenetic pace and often surface-level automated outputs like those from AI tools. This slower, more contemplative path in my pursuit of phenomenological writing offers tranquility and balance—a personal sanctuary amid fast-paced algorithmic influences. As I delve into the nuances of human experience and the existential implications of societal changes, my journey is twofold. I aspire to uncover new insights and understandings, but also to grow amidst the often unspoken pressures facing researchers today. The demand for rapid, high-volume outputs can overshadow the depth and reflection that true learning requires. My commitment to phenomenological research offers a counterbalance to these pressures, providing a space for both personal and academic growth. I plan to protect it as a nurturing rather than consuming process, allowing me to contribute meaningfully without succumbing to the relentless pace often expected in contemporary scholarship.
Jean-Paul Sartre wisely noted, ‘Existence precedes essence,’ reminding us that each of us shapes our own unique meaning and purpose in life. With this in mind, may I extend warm wishes to everyone for their passion and goals this year, research or otherwise.
May you all find the individual paths that bring you joy and fulfilment.
Here’s to finding or creating those key spaces for self-discovery, personal growth, and the pursuit of what makes your heart truly content.
Felicity
Happy New Year 2024
