World Mental Health Day stands as a beacon for mental health education, awareness, and advocacy, shining light on the social stigmas that often shadow this critical aspect of our well-being. First launched by the World Federation for Mental Health in 1992, the initiative has since expanded its reach to over 150 countries worldwide. Although the day serves as a crucial reminder for all, its message rings particularly true for our youngest. Startling statistics reveal that 1 in 8 children and young people have a diagnosable mental health condition, underscoring the urgent need for attention and action in this area.
Since 2016, the #HelloYellow campaign has supported young people’s mental health. Schools, organisations, and individuals participate by wearing yellow and engaging in activities that promote mental well-being. The idea – to show young people that they’re not alone with their mental health, and to raise awareness about the importance of mental well-being.
The Power of Youth Leadership in #HelloYellow
While wearing yellow may seem like a simple gesture, it can have a profound impact when combined with meaningful actions. This year, my son and his friend, both in Year 6, took the lead as ambassadors for the cause. But they wanted to go beyond the call to wear yellow; they wanted to create something lasting and impactful. The result was the innovative Yellow Friendship Chain.
Each pupil, from nursery through to year 6, would be invited to write something uplifting on a strip of yellow paper to be linked together to form a chain. This chain would then be displayed as a constant reminder of the importance of kindness and unity. My son, a Year 6 pupil, put this sentiment into words through a poem as a preparation for the day:
In a world where skies are sometimes grey,
A ray of yellow light can brighten the day.
Wear a splash of sunshine, wear it with pride,
Show the world the warmth you carry inside.
In every heart, in every mind, there’s a need for love, a need to be kind.
For when the mind is shadowed with doubt and fear,
A word of kindness can make it clear.
We’ll make a chain of happy thoughts, bright and light,
With yellow strips of friendship, oh what a sight!
Each link a hug, a happy word, a smile so sweet.
So wear the yellow, let it shine bright,
Be the beacon in someone’s night.
For every mind matters, every one counts,
Let’s spread the kindness in large amounts.
Story Time, Kind Words, and a Lasting Reminder
Teachers took the time to read stories focusing on kindness, empathy, and mental health, allowing for open discussions among students. In the older classes, students wrote kind words on strips of yellow paper, contributing to the class’s paper chain. The very youngest drew pictures symbolising kindness, so all had a way to participate. The end result was a vivid tapestry of kind words, uplifting drawings, supported further by inspiring digital posters.

In a symbolic gesture of unity, these individual class chains are due to be connected to form one long chain. This interconnected chain will be displayed in the assembly hall, serving as a lasting reminder of their commitment to each other’s well-being and the importance of mental health.
So, as we look back on a day filled with yellow hues, uplifting messages, and heartfelt poems, let’s remember that every mind matters and every effort counts. I really do hope they become a shining example, keep this momentum going, not just today but every day, and make mental well-being a priority in their lives
